We think that there are two good reasons:
1. It gives your site some individuality and a look of professionalism.
2. It provides extra keywords which assist in search engine search.
Included in the basic package price is a domain name with a .uk extension. For other extensions there will be a small extra charge.
How should I choose an extension?
- .co.uk for a business based in the UK
- .me.uk for a personal website of someone based in UK
- .org.uk for a UK group or organisation
- .com for an international business
- .org for an international organisation
- .eu to be identified with Europe in some way
How should I choose my domain name? Some guidelines:
- If your business is ‘Aunty Martha’s' you can choose the domain name auntymarthas.co.uk. However bear in mind you'll have to give out this domain over the phone. Most people can't spell these days and won't know if aunty ends with a ‘y’ or ‘ie’. Also you'll have to explain that there is no apostrophe in the domain name and they are not allowed anyway.
- Think about choosing a domain name which has meaningful words which can be used in search. Thus, if Aunty Martha's is a bed and breakfast business in Swindon you could choose swindonbedbreakfast.co.uk. Google will like this and you'll probably get hits when people search using the words ‘Swindon bed breakfast’. You can still title your site ‘Aunty Martha's B&B’ of course.
- The only characters which can be used are: letters, numbers and hyphens (-). (You could have swindon-bed-breakfast.co.uk). You might have to explain to people over the phone, however, that a hyphen is a dash but not an underscore. Actually we like the use of hyphens - we've used one in our domain name. We think that the separation of the words makes the domain more readable.
Now find yourself a suitable domain name using the tool above.
